《三字经》

我们接下来这一次的辩论赛,辩题是

儿童是否应该学习《三字经》。

下面我们对这本中华传统儿童启蒙教材做一个基本的介绍。

Our next debate is about Three Character Primer, should children still learn it in today’s time? Let me introduce the primer to those of you who are not yet very familiar with it.

三字经的作者有两位:南宋的王应麟,还有民国的章太炎。前面的三分之二部分是王应麟所写,后面的三分之一是章太炎所编。

The three character primer has two authors: Wang Yinglin from the Southern Song Dynasty, and Zhang Taiyan from the Republic of China period, who added content hundreds of years later. About the first two thirds of the content was written by Wang, and the rest was written by Zhang.

书的特点之一是,三个字一句,适合儿童朗读,太长了孩子就读不顺了,就会失去对这本教材的兴趣。这种短句子也相对容易记忆。

One of the features of this primer is, three words form a short sentence, suitable for children of young age to read aloud, they will lose interest in the primer if the the sentences are too long to read. Also, this type of short sentences are easy to memorize.

我们注意一下,王应麟是南宋的文人,那是一个富裕、强盛而且自由开放的时代,中华民族历史上少有的盛世,也正是因为这种自由开放的环境,才出来这种相对清新的启蒙教材,而不是又死气沉沉的四书五经。

Note that Wang is a scholar in the Southern Song Dynasty, it was a wealthy, powerful, open era, rare flourishing age in Chinese history. And it was just because of this free and open environment, could this type of book for kids come out, rather than another book or classic.

但是到了今天,这样的启蒙教材肯定已经落后于时代了,当然其中的可取之处也仍然还是不少,所以我们现在需要来辩一下,对这本教材,到底是应该取,还是留。那些过时的内容到底占了多大的篇幅,需要大家各抒己见,来让观众们明白。

But today, this type of textbooks for children must have fallen behind the times, of course there are still merits in it. So we now need to debate, should we keep or throw away the textbook. How much outdated content does it occupy? We need to express our opinions to let the audience understand.
